Aquitaine

Aquitaine is a region of southwestern France, divided into five administrative departments: Dordogne, Gironde, Landes, Lot-et-Garonne and Pyrénées-Atlantiques. There are over 270 kilometers of coastline from north to south (from the mouth of the Gironde to the mouth of the Bidasoa) including the widest beaches in France. A veritable inland sea, the Bay of Arcachon punctuates the coast, protected it from the vagaries of the Atlantic Ocean.

The world's most famous vineyards are in Bordeaux, divided into 57 appellations of origin, guaranteeing the quality and therefore reputation of the biggest names: Sauternes, Pomerol, Médoc, Saint-Emilion ...

One of the largest forests in Europe, the Landes de Gascogne, is best explored on foot, by bike, but also canoeing on the calm lake waters. The Landes also houses towns and villages steeped in history, tradition and the undeniable sweetness of life; spas, feria, bandas occur daily in summer. A strong identity and proud Basque Country spirit exist in a land of contrasts: from the Rhune , to the sheltered beaches of St Jean de Luz, the huge Iraty forest and finally the green valleys of the Adour and Bidasoa. Summer days are best spent hiking, mountain biking, paragliding, rafting, or fishing, and skiing is the winter sport of choice.

Inland, the Dordogne and Lot et Garonne are rich in ancient history of the region: caves, prehistoric and exceptional sites, castles and bastides.

In the end, how can present Aquitaine without addressing its huge range of flavours and specialties ... Foie gras, Armagnac, Bayonne ham, Agen prunes, cannelés, pastis landais, and of course its wines ...
